How to Start a Stihl Chainsaw

Starting a Stihl chainsaw is relatively straightforward, but there are a few things to bear in mind to ensure reliable operation.

How to Start a Stihl Chainsaw | Ultimate Guide

For starters, you will want to ensure you are using the chainsaw in an area free of obstacles and other people.

The manufacturer also suggests you should aim to start the chainsaw while in a sitting position, although this is not essential. You can adopt different techniques depending on the exact type of chainsaw you are using, with electric and gas-fuelled models requiring a slightly different approach.

Fuel-Powered Stihl Chainsaws

If you are using a gas-powered chainsaw, you should first need to ensure it is fully fuelled. Once you have checked to ensure it is fully fuelled, you should make sure the fuel cap is tightly fastened. You also need to make sure there is no fuel residue on the outside of the chainsaw itself. If you do find any fuel residue, make sure you clean it away carefully. You should also ensure no other fuel sources are nearby when starting your Stihl chainsaw. You can then turn your focus to the chain brake and activate it. This chainsaw component is situated directly ahead of the handlebar. To activate the chain brake, all you need to do push it. By doing so, you will ensure the chain is securely locked, allowing you to safely start the chainsaw.

Some chainsaw models will also include a cover that is placed over the bar and chain sections. If your chainsaw does include one, make sure you remove it prior to starting the tool. More advanced Stihl chainsaw models will also include a decompression valve. If your model includes one, you will need to press down on the valve before you continue onto the next step.

Many Stihl chainsaw models will also feature a primer valve situated close to the handlebar. You will need to pump this primer by pushing down on it a few times. By pressing down the primer, you are forcing fuel to circulate. Finally, you need to press down and hold the throttle trigger, before moving your thumb to the master control. Move the master control downwards, pushing it as far as it will go. This is the standard starting position you should be using, every time you come to use your chainsaw.

Electric Chainsaws

An electric Stihl chainsaw is far easier to get going. To begin, you need to connect tool to a suitable power supply. Make sure the supply you are using matches the voltage of your chainsaw. Pay special attention to voltage if you are using an extension cord. Although you can start from a seated or standing position when starting an electric chainsaw, you will need to ensure you are properly balanced. As with a conventional chainsaw, make sure you are starting an electric chainsaw in an area free of obstacles.

Next, you will need to pull the hand guard down in the direction of the handle. The hand guard can be found directly ahead of the handlebar. Pull the hand guard in your direction, moving it until you hear an audible click. You can then press down on the trigger switch lockout. This lockout switch can be found at the side of the handle, directly above the trigger. Use your thumb to press down on the switch and maintain firm pressure. Finally, you need to apply pressure to the trigger that is situated underneath the handle. Provided you are also holding down on the lockout, your electric chainsaw is primed and ready to be used.
