How to build a rustic coffee table
In this article, we will be building a rustic coffee table. This project is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about carpentry and woodworking. We will be using basic tools and techniques, so even beginners can follow along. So let’s get started!
The first step is to gather your materials. For this project, you will need:
-1×8 lumber (we used cedar)
-1×4 lumber (we used cedar)
-2×4 lumber (we used cedar)
-Plywood (we used 3/4″ thick birch plywood)
-Kreg Jig (optional, but helpful)
-Drill
-Sander
-Stain (optional)
-Polyurethane (optional)
Now that you have your materials, it’s time to start building! The first step is to cut all of your lumber to size. We used the following dimensions for our coffee table:
-2x4s: 24″ long (4 pieces)
-1x8s: 35″ long (6 pieces)
-1x4s: 35″ long (4 pieces)
-Plywood: 30″ x 36″ (1 piece)
Once all of your lumber is cut to size, it’s time to start assembling the frame. We used a Kreg Jig to drill pocket holes into the 2x4s, but this is optional. If you don’t have a Kreg Jig, you can just use regular wood screws. Start by attaching the 2x4s together using either pocket holes and screws or just screws. Then, attach the 1x8s to the frame. We used screws for this as well.
Now it’s time to add the plywood top. Simply place the plywood on top of the frame and screw it in place. Be sure to use plenty of screws so that the top is nice and sturdy.
The last step is to sand everything down and finish it off with a stain or polyurethane (or both!). We chose to just use a dark walnut stain on ours, but feel free to finish yours however you like.
